The Children's Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZUCH), with 60 years of history, is the largest comprehensive center for pediatric medical care in ZhejiangProvince. It is located by the side of the picturesque WestLake in Hangzhou. Its predecessor was initially established in May 1951 as “Zhejiang Provincial Maternal and Children’s Hospital" led by Professor Li Yuhua, China's well-known pediatrician, as the founder and first president of the hospital.
 
 The hospital has been actively involved in the fields of pediatric medical care, medical training, teaching, research, and preventive health care. Several provincial prevention and treatment centers have been set up in the hospital, including the

 

Center of Neonatal Disease Prevention and Treatment, the Center of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment, the Center of Metabolic Disease Screening, the Diagnostic Center of Genetic Diseases, and the HearingScreeningManagementCenter.
 

 

The hospital has 20 inpatient wards with a total capacity of 850 beds. The annual outpatient visits sum up to more than 1,520,000. The annual inpatient visits are nearly 35,000 and annual surgery cases are over 14,000.

The hospital runs 29 sub-specialties. The clinical departments include internal medicine of pediatrics, pediatric surgery, neonatology, and preventive pediatric health care.
 
Internal medicine of pediatrics includes the following sub-divisions: pulmonology, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology.
 
Pediatric surgery includes the following sub-divisions: general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, and neonatology surgery.
 
The intensive care center includes NICU, SICU, and PICU.
 
The department of preventive health care includes the pediatric health care clinic, pediatric psychology, pediatric disease screening, and rehabilitation medicine clinic.
 
Other clinics include emergency department, dermatology, stomatology, ENT, ophthalmology, and traditional Chinese medicine.

After 60 years of protracted and unremitting efforts, the hospital has already become one of the top children's hospitals in China in terms of pediatric academics, clinical competence, and comprehensive strengths. Pediatrics is a national key subject approved by the Ministry of Education. Several of the hospital's pediatric disciplines including Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Neonatology, Gastroenterology, and Respiratory Medicine all belong to national clinical key disciplines approved by the Ministry of Health, while disciplines of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Health Care, Pediatric Perioperative Medicine, and Adolescent Medicine are provincial medical key disciplines along with national and provincial key laboratories.

The hospital highly values the discipline improvement. We developed several characteristic subjects as Neonatology, Child Health Care, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Hemotology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine, and Perioperative Medicine. The World Journal of Pediatrics launched in 2005 as the only international English pediatric journal in China, was indexed by SCI and MEDLINE in 2008, which has provided a platform of academic exchange. In the past decade, the hospital has received research funds of RMB 60 millions and conducted 729 international and national research projects, including five international projects, 43 national projects, and 83 provincial projects. There are 63 science and technology research awards honored by national and provincial governments, including one item of First Prize, eight items of Second Prize, fifteen items of Third Prize in Provincial Award for Science and Technology Progress. We also won one Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Award. A total of 2,046 research papers were published, among which 244 papers are indexed by SCI.
 
In 1981, the hospital held one of the earliest Specialties Leading to Master Degree on pediatrics in China. The pediatrics doctoral program and postdoctoral research station were approved in 1986 and 2000 respectively. Pediatrics was approved as the provincial key support subject in 1996, as the provincial key subject in 2002, and as the national key subject by the Ministry of Education in 2007. The Children's Hospital is responsible for pediatric teaching as well as internships for medical and nursing students of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and City College of Zhejiang University. Meanwhile, as the pediatrician training base and nursing specialists training base of the Health Ministry and Zhejiang Province, the hospital provides a series of national and provincial continuing education programs. The hospital involved in editing the textbook of Pediatrics for 5-year and 8-year medical students. The hospital owns 15 doctoral advisors and 38 master's degree advisors, who have trained 54 doctoral degree students, 145 master's degree students, and 119 on-the-job master's degree graduates.

The Children's Hospital is one of the earliest hospitals that promoted international cooperation. After entering the new century, the hospital has sped up the pace of international cooperation. Good cooperative relationships have been formed in many ways in the areas of medical care, scientific research, teaching, and management between ZUCH and the universities, institutes, children's hospitals from more than 20 countries.

Hangzhou was settled as early as 4,700 years ago, by the aurora Liangzhu Civilization. One of the seven ancient capitals and the scenic tourism and historical culture cities in China, Hangzhou once was applauded as" the most splendid and luxurious city in the world" by Marco Polo, the Italian traveler in the 13th century. 

    Under the jurisdiction of Hangzhou are 8 districts, 3 county-level cities and 2 counties, with a total area of 16,596 square kilometers and a total population of 6.4278 million. As a central city on the Southern wing of Yangtze Delta, Hangzhou's city proper covers an area of 3,068 square kilometers with a population of 3.932 million.
 
Under the sound leadership of the Central Government, CPC Zhejiang Provincial Party committee and Provincial Government, Hangzhou has witnessed great development in economy and all social causes with the hard work and devotion of its citizens since the drive of Reform and Opening-up. The GDP of Hangzhou in 2003 was RMB 209.977 billion, an increase of 15.2% over the previous year. It has maintained an annual growth rate of more than 10% for successive 13 years. Its total economic strength ranked No. 8 among all the big and medium-sized cities in China, No. 2 among all provincial capitals and No. 3 among all sub-provincial cities. Its GDP per capita reached RMB 32,700, or USD 3,950 as converted by the same year's foreign exchange rate. Its total financial revenues reached RMB 32.871 billion, an increase of 28.2% over the previous year. The fixed assets investments in all social sectors were RMB 100.618 billion, an increase of 30.7% over the previous year. The proportions among the three industries were 6.1 : 51.6 : 42.3. The non state-owned economy accounted for 50.5% of the GDP. The total financial revenues from the first 8 months this year have reached RMB 26.799 billion, an increase of 19.6% over the same period last year.
 
With the agricultural structure adjustment deepened and agricultural industrialization accelerated, the efficiency agriculture of Hangzhou is witnessing rapid development. Hangzhou attaches much importance to the construction of "Silicon Valley in Paradise"and the development of high and new technology industries, among which the"the Information Port and New Pharmacy Port", Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, Hangzhou High-New Technological Industries Development Zone, and High Education Park are the backbones. The four major pillar industries of food processing, machinery, electronic communications, and textile with considerable scale and advantages have formed. In 2003, above-scale industrial enterprises in Hangzhou accomplished the total output value of RMB 319.851 billion and taxes RMB 34.776 billion. The export-oriented economy has been developing quickly with more opened areas and increased opening extent. By the end of 2003, Hangzhou had successively approved 6,120 foreign funded projects from 60 industries throughout the world. The investors were from 76 countries and regions all over the world. 42 out of the Top 500 world enterprises had settled down in Hangzhou. In 2003, the total foreign trade export value reached USD 10.95 billion (an increase of 29.2% over the previous year), USD 6.47 billion of which were from municipal-level foreign trade exports. Its products were exported to 180 countries and regions all over the globe. The total import value of Hangzhou was USD 7.28 billion, an increase of 57.5%. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport has been developing new international lines, accelerating its contact with overseas airports, and promoting its reputation.
 
Sciences and educations in Hangzhou are advanced, and there are 35 colleges, numerous polytechnic schools, and more than 80 natural science research institutes here. The total number of college students is 269,800. In addition, Hangzhou also boasts its rapidly developing culture and sanitation causes, increasingly improved housing situation and community environment. It has altogether 12 national honors including National Hygienic City and National Environment Protection Model City, etc. In October 2001, Hangzhou won UN Human Habitat Award in October 2002, and the honor of International Garden City. Since 2000, Hangzhou has successfully held the annual West Lake Expo four times, and made known its city brand name by launching four gold name cards (traveling, living, learning, and careering in Hangzhou), a channel for the world to know Hangzhou and for Hangzhou to head for the world.
 
What is more, the city has also done a lot to strengthen its international ties with cities from all over the world. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is considered a Garden Airport due to its verdant setting and floral gardens and is one of the most important territorial airports in China.

It aims to publish peer-reviewed original papers, reviews and editorials concerned with clinical practice and research in pediatrics. All submitted papers are reviewed by at least two referees expert in the field of the submitted paper. The journal is abstracted and indexed in SCI Expanded, IM/MEDLINE, Chemical Abstracts (CA) and VINITI database.
